Pope Francis

Right now we are having a discussion with Joe M. on the attempts by Pope Francis to start a reformation movement within the Catholic Church. Please read, enjoy, and join in if you so desire. We will not stay with this topic for long because there are many far more pressing and informative concepts to exam.

This conversation was started by Joe M. and is shown with the first message first.

Joe M. : It seems to me Pope Francis is doing a decent job of box cutting to lessen the confines you described in “Boxes.” What do you think?

J. D. : Explain to me briefly what do you think he has done in the way of box cutting.  2 or 3 answers would suffice.

Joe M. : Reviewing his priorities, words, and actions:

1. What’s important in life

  • He urged Catholic priests to devote themselves to helping the poor and suffering instead of worrying about careers as Church “managers.”
  • He asks his listeners to ask themselves: How often is Jesus inside and knocking at the door to be let out, to come out? And we do not let him out because of our own need for security, because so often we are locked into ephemeral structures that serve solely to make us slaves and not free children of God.”
  • One of his rules is that big donors and companies that do business with the church should get no special treatment.
  • His comments on:
    1. “Money is useful to carry out many things, for works to support humanity,” he has said. “But when your heart is attached to it, it destroys you.”
    2. “Men and women are sacrificed to the idols of profit and consumption, it is the ‘culture of waste.’ If a computer breaks it is a tragedy, but poverty, the needs and dramas of so many people end up being considered normal. … When the stock market drops 10 points in some cities, it constitutes a tragedy. Someone who dies is not news, but lowering income by 10 points is a tragedy! In this way people are thrown aside as if they were trash.”
    3. “God save us from a worldly Church with superficial spiritual and pastoral trappings!”
    4. “How I would like a Church which is poor and for the poor!”

2. We are connected
“ If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him? The problem is not having this tendency, no, we must be brothers and sisters to one another.

  • “The perfect family doesn’t exist, nor is there a perfect husband or a perfect wife, and let’s not talk about the perfect mother-in-law! It’s just us sinners.” A healthy family life requires frequent use of three phrases: “May I? Thank you, and I’m sorry” and “never, never, never end the day without making peace.”

3. He walks his talk

  • He took his name from St Francis, patron saint to the poor
  • He lives humbly:
    1. Simply signs his name as Francis, not Pope Francis,
    2. Attends morning Mass with the Vatican staff,
    3. Resides in a simple one-bedroom, second-floor suite instead of the special papal residence,
    4. Frequently spotted in the buffet line, tray in hand, at the Santa Marta employee dining room,
    5. Takes no holidays, explaining that if the poor can’t take vacations, why should he?

Although he has a ways to go, nor do I expect him to completely succeed, I think he’s doing a better than decent job of box cutting. What do you think?

Joe M. : He was voted in for these changes to be made, but as you say, we’ll see if the changes are desired now they’ve started happening. There’s no policy or procedure for firing a bishop, so the resignation of Monsignor Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst was accepted. Some box cutting going on.

J.D. : We will just have to wait and see what happens. Unfortunately, I am not very optimistic. The church the Pope heads is the largest richest institution on earth. There may be too many vested interest on the part of his Cardinals to make any meaningful change possible.

J.D. : Of course you are correct in that the One experiences everything but follow what I am about to say. A few years ago a Jamaican lady friend of my computer repairman read Awakening and was blown away by the content. She told me that the book answered all of her questions except for one. Her question was: If there is a God or a Creator One, why does it allow the wars and turmoil which takes place on earth? At the time, I did not have an answer for her, but after communicating with my Inner One, the answer became apparent. Since there is only One, and We are It and It is Us, the question should be: WHY DON’T WE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE WARS AND TURMOIL? We need to look no further than our bathroom mirror for the solution.

Which brings us back to Pope Francis. He has, from his public record, been looking into the mirror for a long, long time. The problem with his current situation is how many other church leaders are looking into their mirror? Not very many, I would dare to say. Theirs is an institution nearly 2,000 years old and during their reign of terror that church has committed every atrocity known to man. They have only donned the lambs wool of gentility in the past 100 years and maybe I am being to generous with that number. However, Pope Francis justly deserves accolades for bringing this subject to the forefront and starting the discussion about what the true direction his church should follow.

Now what can we do? Myself – I can do absolutely nothing! I am not a Catholic and would never entertain the idea of becoming one. Any change has to come from the masses who make up the body of the church. Unfortunately, like most people they are too deaf, dumb, and blind as to what their church or anything else is really all about.

When the Priest molested the young boys, like sheep they went to their Bishops to complain when they should have gone to the POLICE! The molesting Priest did not fear a reprimand from their church, but they did fear jail time from the authorities. So my question is how will any change come from people that are so cowed by their religion that they think going to the police is an act against their church and God?
As caring human beings the question that confronts us: Is it possible for us to start a movement which will change the human condition for the better? Will anyone listen? Will anyone care?
